Prominent political commentators Reno Omokri and Ossai Ovie Success have publicly criticized Labour Party’s Peter Obi for not attending the funeral of former President Muhammadu Buhari, held today in Daura, Katsina State.
The burial ceremony, which drew top political figures including President Bola Tinubu and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, marked a significant moment in Nigeria’s political and national history. However, the absence of Peter Obi has sparked sharp condemnation from political voices in the North and South.
Reno Omokri, a former presidential aide, took to social media to question Obi’s priorities, referenced his recent public appearance in Ilorin just a day before the funeral.
“What was so important to Peter Obi that he chose not to turn up at Daura for General Muhammadu Buhari’s funeral today?” Omokri asked.
“This was a man who was only yesterday in Ilorin, attending the 2nd Annual Colloquium of Associate Professor Abdulmumin Yinka Ajia, where he gave a speech asking the North to zone the ADC presidential ticket to the South.”
Omokri went further to accuse Obi of political inconsistency and strategic missteps, especially concerning his 2027 presidential ambition.
“Campaigning to be President was important enough for him to visit Ilorin, but Buhari, the modern-day Ahmadu Bello of the North, was not important enough for him to visit Daura. And he wants the North to vote for him in 2027? The same man who promised to unleash ‘religious war’ on the Muslim Ummah? I hope the North remembers this in 2027.”

Ossai Ovie Success also expressed disappointment at Obi’s decision not to attend the funeral.
“Peter Obi didn’t attend President Buhari’s burial. Why? Because I am disappointed. So how does he intend to get votes from the North?” Ovie wrote.

The late President Muhammadu Buhari was buried in accordance with Islamic rites, with governors, traditional rulers, ministers, and dignitaries present to pay their final respects.
Peter Obi’s conspicuous absence is now raising questions about his relationship with Northern leaders and the perception of his national political outreach ahead of the 2027 elections. The incident has triggered debates on political optics, national unity, and respect for state figures.
