Nigerian businessman and political commentator, Isaac Fayose, has called on Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi to consider returning to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) following the shocking resignation of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar from the opposition party.

In a video posted on his Instagram page, Fayose jubilantly reacted to the news of Atiku’s latest political exit, saying it marks a fresh opportunity for the PDP to rebuild and reclaim power from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

“For the third time in 20 years, Atiku has left PDP,” Fayose said, noting that the former vice president had become a repeated stumbling block to the party’s ability to present a viable presidential challenger.

According to Fayose, Atiku’s political moves have consistently disrupted PDP’s internal democracy, weakened the party’s cohesion, and fractured its support base during critical election cycles.

He argued that with Atiku now out of the way, the PDP has a clearer path to consolidate, refocus, and position itself ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Fayose further suggested that Obi—who was the PDP’s 2019 vice-presidential candidate before defecting to the Labour Party in 2022—should return to the umbrella party, now that Atiku is no longer in the way.

“It is time for Peter Obi to come back to PDP,” he said, adding that Obi stands a much better chance of mounting a serious challenge against President Tinubu with the political structure and reach that the PDP provides.

Obi’s impressive 2023 presidential run under Labour Party captured national attention and saw him finish third in the polls, closely behind Atiku.

However, Fayose believes that with PDP’s backing, Obi’s chances in 2027 could be significantly enhanced—especially with the internal roadblocks that once hindered his rise now removed.

He wrote;

“BREAKING: Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has officially resigned from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).” For the 3rd time in 20 years….😮🤣😃😀
I think it is time for Peter Obi to come back to PDP”
