Senate President Godswill Akpabio has stirred national attention following a slip of the tongue during a recent Senate plenary session, where he mistakenly mentioned “the burial of Tinubu” while referring to events connected to former President Muhammadu Buhari.

The gaffe occurred during deliberations on the floor of the Senate when Akpabio meant to reference Buhari’s funeral but instead uttered “President Tinubu’s burial,” sparking gasps from the chamber.

He quickly attempted to correct himself, but the moment had already registered with attentive Nigerians, many of whom wasted no time in sharing the clip online.

Reactions have ranged from amusement to sharp criticism, with some commentators describing the gaffe as “disturbing,” considering the sensitive nature of presidential references. Others suggested it was simply a slip of the tongue that should not be overanalyzed.

This is coming after Imo State Governor Hope Uzodinma also made a similar verbal error while paying tribute to the late President. During a church service in honour of Buhari, Uzodinma almost prayed for the “soul of former President Tinubu” before stopping mid-sentence and correcting himself. That incident, too, was caught on video and circulated widely on social media, drawing both mockery and concern.

With both gaffes occurring within days of each other, Nigerians online have begun questioning the attentiveness of the nation’s top leaders in times of national grief.

For critics, these repeated errors are not just innocent slips—they reflect a disturbing pattern of disengagement among political elites during critical national moments.
