In a move that has sparked nationwide outrage and disbelief, the Federal Government of Nigeria has approved a staggering N712.26 billion for the full renovation of Terminal 1 of the Murtala Mohammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos.
This development was officially disclosed by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, during a press briefing, as captured in a viral clip now making rounds on social media.
Keyamo emphasized the urgency and importance of the project, stating that the MMIA Terminal 1—originally constructed in 1979—has suffered decades of structural decay and no longer meets modern aviation standards.
He described the rehabilitation as “long overdue” and assured that the upgrade would not only enhance passenger experience but also position Lagos as a regional aviation hub.
The renovation project, which is expected to span 22 months, will be fully funded by the Federal Government and executed through the ministry’s Public Procurement processes.

However, Nigerians across social media platforms have responded with widespread skepticism and disbelief, questioning the rationale behind the colossal sum for a single terminal.
Many commenters likened the budget to that of constructing an entirely new airport in some developed countries.
Some accused the government of excessive spending without transparency, while others demanded a public breakdown of how the N712 billion would be spent.

According to report, the Federal Executive Council (FEC), chaired by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, gave its nod to the massive allocation as part of efforts to modernize Nigeria’s major international aviation gateway.
While the Aviation Ministry maintains that the project is essential for safety, tourism, and global competitiveness, public scrutiny remains intense. As the 22-month countdown begins, Nigerians are closely watching for tangible signs of progress—and proof that this is more than just another headline-grabbing expenditure.
