Flooding has displaced scores of residents and destroyed properties in the Ijede area of Ikorodu, Lagos State, following a torrential downpour that lasted several hours.
The disaster, which left homes submerged and entire streets waterlogged, has triggered widespread appeals for urgent intervention from Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and relevant state authorities.
According to eyewitness accounts and viral videos circulating on social media, the flood swept through several residential areas, leaving families stranded and unable to retrieve their belongings. Personal properties including electronics, furniture, food supplies, official documents, and household appliances were destroyed in the sudden surge.
“This is the worst flood we’ve experienced in Ijede,” one distraught resident lamented. “We watched helplessly as the water consumed everything. We couldn’t save anything. Our homes, our memories — all gone.”
Another affected victim, speaking in a video clip, made a passionate appeal to the Lagos State government: “We are now homeless. We need shelter, food, water — everything is gone. We are calling on Governor Sanwo-Olu to come to our rescue immediately. This is beyond our capacity.”
The flooding incident has sparked outrage in the community, with many blaming poor drainage infrastructure and government negligence for the scale of the disaster. Locals say the tragedy could have been averted if proper flood mitigation systems had been implemented before the onset of the rainy season.
The Ijede flood adds to the growing list of flood-prone zones in Lagos, raising further concerns about the state’s preparedness for climate-induced emergencies.
