Super Falcons captain Ajibade and President Tinubu

Super Falcons captain Ajibade and President Tinubu

In a recent interview with media personality Chude Jideonwo, Super Falcons captain Asisat Ajibade addressed the Federal Government’s promised rewards following Nigeria’s victory at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

Ajibade disclosed that she and her teammates have not yet received the $100,000 cash prize announced by President Bola Tinubu. Despite this, she expressed optimism that the funds would eventually be delivered.

She also addressed growing public curiosity about the status of the promised rewards. Ajibade disclosed that the revelation became necessary because friends and acquaintances had been pressuring the players for their “share” of the money. According to her, even their match bonuses from the tournament remain unpaid, noted that the process is still ongoing.

The government’s pledge came during a ceremony at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, where President Tinubu hosted the Super Falcons to celebrate their landmark triumph in the WAFCON final held in Rabat, Morocco.

Alongside the $100,000 cash prizes, the President announced allocations of three-bedroom apartments to each player as part of the recognition package.

President Tinubu also extended appreciation to the 11-member technical team supporting the Super Falcons, announcing that each member would receive $50,000 in cash awards in recognition of their contributions to the team’s success.

The Super Falcons’ 2024 WAFCON triumph marked a historic moment for Nigerian women’s football. The discussion with Jideonwo offered insight into the mindset of the players, their gratitude for national recognition, and the lingering anticipation of promised rewards.

As anticipation grows, Nigerians await the disbursement of the promised funds, hopeful that the government will follow through on its commitments to the nation’s football heroines.
