Reno Omokri, former presidential aide and social media commentator, has once again taken a swipe at Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, following the latter’s criticism of the Federal Government’s approval of ₦142 billion for the construction of modern bus terminals across Nigeria’s six geo-political zones.
The Federal Executive Council (FEC), during its last meeting, approved the project as part of efforts to improve public transportation infrastructure nationwide. President Bola Tinubu’s administration argued that the initiative would help cushion the effect of fuel subsidy removal by supporting the rollout of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses.
Reacting to the development, Obi had described the approval as evidence of “misplaced priority,” insisting that scarce national resources were being wrongly channelled. In a statement via his X (formerly Twitter) handle, the former Anambra governor wrote that “the difference between the success and failure of development in any nation is how you prioritise your scarce resources.” He further accused the government of incompetence, lack of focus, and poor leadership.
However, Reno Omokri swiftly countered Obi’s claims, accusing him of “lies and misinformation.” In a lengthy post on his social media page, Omokri argued that Obi deliberately misrepresented the figures to mislead Nigerians.
“Bus Terminals and Teaching Hospital Budget: Peter Obi and Lies are 5 and 6,” Omokri wrote. He explained that the ₦142 billion was not for each terminal but for all six, amounting to about $92 million in total. Drawing comparisons, Omokri cited Egypt, which recently spent the equivalent of $105 million on just one central bus station.
According to him, Obi also misled Nigerians regarding the budget for teaching hospitals and psychiatric centres, which he claimed were under ₦100 billion. Omokri stressed that the ₦100 billion was only a subvention, as the institutions also generate significant internal revenue.
Omokri further accused Obi of gaslighting the public, recalling his earlier claim that President Tinubu borrowed more than past Nigerian presidents combined. “That was a lie,” Omokri stated, adding that Tinubu had actually reduced Nigeria’s debt from $113.7 billion to $97 billion.
The former presidential aide concluded by branding Obi a habitual purveyor of falsehoods, declaring: “Peter Obi is a liar, and when he lies, he speaks his own native language!”
The heated exchange has once again reignited political debates online, with supporters of both men defending their positions on Nigeria’s infrastructural priorities and economic direction.
