Bisi Alimi and his husband Anthony Davis sat with LITV’s Hero Daniels to discuss their relationship, LGBTQ, among other things and social media users had a strong reaction to the historic interview after it was shared online.

Bisi Alimi and his husband Anthony Davis made history as they became the first married gay couple to be interviewed on a Nigerian television station.

The couple who married in 2016 opened up about their relationship, starting with how they met, their first date, marriage, their plans for kids, their future and more.

Speaking with Linda Ikeji TV host, Hero Daniels, Alimi and his Australian husband disclosed that they started living together three weeks after they met. It all started with a first date which saw Bisi cook Davis a dish of Nigerian Jollof and goat meat. Bisi further revealed that they kissed on that first date after eating the rice and Davis blamed it on the goat meat.

“I cook rice you will not kiss. What is that one? Waste of time,” Bisi said matter-of-factly.

And Davis replied: “I don’t remember, maybe there was something in the goat meat. I don’t know.”

The couple also addressed homophobia and efforts they are making to break down barriers of homophobia.

Sharing a short video of the interview to Instagram, Alimi wrote:

“We need in every bay and community a group of Angelic Troublemaker’- Bayard Rustin.

You call it making history, I call it breaking down barriers of homophobia one day at a time. My husband and I had the pleasure of being the first openly gay couple to be interviewed on any Nigeria television ever in the history of the country and for this I am grateful. You will say we made history, but we will say we gave hope to every LGBT person struggling in Nigeria and to let them know their love is valid, they are authentic and a time will come and homophobia will not be fashionable again in Nigeria.
