A former vice president of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar, on Monday, said that the country must return to community policing as a way to tackle the incessant killings of Nigerians.

The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) said this in a post via his Twitter handle, adding that Nigeria is no longer as safe as it was when he was a child.

According to Atiku, when he was a child, the country was safe, no one needed police from Lagos or Kaduna, as the community policing system adapted was good enough for the culture and history of each of the 6 geopolitical zones.

He added that the government can not continue to respond to the incessant killings of Nigerians by mere talk, as more needs to be done, to achieve a result other than what we are currently getting.

He wrote: When I was a child, Nigeria had little crime. We did not depend on police from Lagos or Kaduna. We had a community police system. Nigeria must return to community policing, adapted to suit the culture and history of each of the 6 zones, in order to stem the tide of insecurity.

Our response to the killings of our citizens cannot just talk, talk, and talk. We must take decisive action to protect the lives of all citizens, not just prominent ones. There has to be change, because if we continue with the way things are, we will get the same results.
