Three killed by Lassa fever in Kano, 292 on watch list

No fewer than three people dead and 292 people who had contact with the late victims of the disease have been placed on the state’s health watch list over recent lassa fever outbreak in Kano state.

This was disclosed by the Kano State Commissioner of Health, Dr. Aminu Ibrahim Tsanyawa while speaking in a press conference on Wednesday, January 22.

Dr. Aminu disclosed that two doctors and a patient believed to be the first victim died in the recent outbreak.

He further disclosed that 292 persons who had contact with the late victims are closely being monitored so as to quickly quarantine those who show symptom of the disease and also to contain its spread.

According to reports, the first victim of the recent outbreak in the state is a 28-year-old pregnant woman from Gwale LGA who fell sick two weeks after the death of her mother.

She was referred to Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital from a private hospital but died on January 1, 2020.

The general public has been urged to avoid poorly cooked meat, avoid contact with suspected or confirmed cases or items soiled by them and to report any suspected case to a health facility nearest to them.
