Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari has approved a special salary scale for teachers in the country in commemoration of World Teachers Day.

Education minister, Adamu Adamu, who represented Buhari at an event to celebrate 2020 celebration of World Teachers Day, in Abuja, also announced an increase in the number of years of service from 35 to 40.

Adamu said the implementation of the new salary scheme is to encourage teachers in delivering better service.

The World Teachers’ Day has been held annually on October 5 since 1994 to commemorate the anniversary of the adoption of the 1966 ILO/UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers.

According to UNESCO, this Recommendation sets benchmarks regarding the rights and responsibilities of teachers and standards for their initial preparation and further education, recruitment, employment, and teaching and learning conditions.

Meanwhile, the Delta State Governor Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, has commended teachers in Nigeria for their role in nation-building as they join their counterparts to celebrate World Teachers’ Day 2020 on Monday.

He commended teachers in Delta for their commitment to teaching and learning in all public and private schools in the state, and affirmed that his administration placed a high premium on the welfare of teachers and other workers in the public service.

According to the governor, the state government has continued to ensure that the salaries of teachers were paid regularly as at when due.

He added that as a government, Delta was committed to improving the environment for teaching and learning, which had resulted in the construction and rehabilitation of school buildings and provision of furniture for teachers and students.
