“Burnaboy, Laide Bakare, Mercy Aigbe, …” – Meet Nigerian Celebrities Who Dumped Christianity For Islam

Nigeria is a multi-religious country where citizens enjoy immense rights to religion and thought. It is a country of many religions, such as Christianity, Islam, African Tradition, and others. Some citizens over the years have converted from one religion to another without suppression, particularly in the southwest. 


Nigerian musician and award-winning Afrobeats singer Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu, popularly known as Burnaboy, has publicly declared that he has converted from Christianity to Islam.

He disclosed that his decision was driven by a deep personal quest for truth and spiritual enlightenment.

The disclosure was made by the international star during an interview with American streamer PlaqueBoyMax, where he discussed his journey through faith and philosophy.

When a story about Burnaboy’s conversion to Islam surfaced on social media, it sparked controversy. Some netizens expressed concerns over the decision, while some, particularly Muslims, commended and welcomed him into their fold.

Here is a list of Nigerian celebrities who dumped Christianity for Islam:

FATHIA BALOGUN

She is a Nollywood actress and movie star. She was born into a Christian family. Her father, Williams, was a Christian, and her mother was a Muslim. The Nollywood actress and movie star converted to Islam after marrying a fellow actor and movie star, Saheed Balogun, and she adopted the Muslim name “Fathia.”

LIZ DA SILVA 

She is a Nollywood actress and movie star. Her previous name was Elizabeth Omowumi Tekovi Da-Silva. She was born into a Christian family. She converted to Islam after marrying a Muslim man. She was named Aishat Olaoye—the name of the last wife of the Holy Prophet of Islam, Muhammed—after the birth of her son.

LAIDE BAKARE

She is a Nollywood actress and movie star. Her father is a Muslim from Ibadan, Oyo State, while her mother is a Muslim from Osogbo, Osun State. She converted to Christianity after marrying her first husband, who was a Christian. She later dumped the religion for Islam after marrying her second husband, Alhaji Tunde Oriwo, also known as ATM. Her Muslim names are Sekinat and Aishat.

MERCY AIGBE

She is a Nollywood actress and movie star. She was born into a Christian family. Her father was a Christian. Her mother was a Christian too. Her first husband, Gentry, is a Christian.

She converted to Islam after she divorced her first husband and got married to popular film marketer Kazeem Adeoti. Her Muslim name is Meenah.

CHICHI MORAH

She is the wife of a celebrity singer and music star, the late Olanrewaju AbdulGaniu Fasasi, popularly known as Sound Sultan.

She was born into a Christian family. She got married to AbdulGaniu Fasasi, popularly known as Sound Sultan, in 2009 and converted to Islam due to her love for the religion.

DEBBIE SHOKOYA

She is a Nollywood actress and movie star. She was born into a Christian family. She converted to Islam after marrying Ademola Ejalonibu, a filmmaker, who was a Muslim. She bears Mutmaina as a Muslim name.

ADEBIMPE OYEBADE

She is a Nollywood actress and movie star. She was born into a Christian family. She converted to Islam after marrying her Muslim colleague in the film business, AbdulLateef Adedimeji. She bears Rahman as a Muslim name.

PRISCILLA OJO

She is a daughter of Nollywood actress Iyabo Ojo. She got married to a Tanzanian music star, Juma Jux. She converted to Islam after marrying Jum Jux. She now bears Hadiza as a Muslim name.
