The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) confirmed on Saturday that the All Progressives Congress (APC) had won a by-election to fill the vacant seats in the Kano State House of Assembly’s Ungogo and Kano Municipal constituencies.
WITHIN NIGERIA gathered that the seats fell vacant after the tragic deaths of Aminu Sa’ad, the legislator representing Ungogo Constituency, and Sarki Aliyu Daneji, the legislator representing Kano Municipal Constituency (KMC), on the same day.
The deceased politicians‘ sons, Aminu Sa’ad Sa’ad (Ungogo) and Aliyu Nabil Daneji (Kano Municipal), won overwhelming victories over their opponents.
Prof. Ali Tijani Abdullahi, the INEC Returning Officer, proclaimed the APC candidate, Aminu Sa’ad Sa’ad, victor of the election after polling 8,975 votes against his closest rival from the ADP, Shua’ibu Hashimu, who received 54 votes.
“That Aminu Sa’ad Sa’ad of the APC, having satisfied the requirements of the law, is hereby declared the winner and is returned elected,” Prof. Abdullahi said.
Likewise, Prof. Ibrahim Tajo Siraj, the INEC Returning Officer in Kano Municipal, proclaimed Daneji the winner of the election. According to Prof. Siraj, Daneji won with 7,484 votes over his nearest PRP challenger, Shehu Ishaq Abdullahi, who received 105 votes.
“That Aliyu Nabil Daneji of the APC, having satisfied the requirements of the law, is hereby declared the winner and is returned elected,” Prof. Siraj said.
Many political observers, however, are concerned about the All Progressives Congress (APC) victory, despite the popularity of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).
It was gathered that the All Progressives Congress (APC) was able to win the Kano by-election because the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) did not nominate candidates for the two vacant seats in the Kano State House of Assembly.
A statement obtained by WITHIN NIGERIA, attributed to Habibu Mohammed, the Kwankwassiya movement’s spokesperson, revealed that the party, led by Rabiu Kwankwaso, had already agreed that the sons of the deceased lawmakers be allowed to run in the election despite joining the All Progressives Congress (APC) with the governor.
