Nudity in music, consumers fault – video director, Unlimited LA

• Unlimited LA has faulted viewers for being behind the nudity displayed in many music videos.
• Speaking from experience the video director said he has had varying instances where an artiste would want a certain aspect infused in their music video, just so their fans and consumers can relate.

Popular Nigerian cinematographer, Buari Olalekan Oluwasegun who is better known as Unlimited L.A, has explained that the infusion of foreign cultures and nudity in Nigerian music videos is to appeal to music consumers.

He said some artistes ask video directors to infuse particular culture or nudity in their music videos based on consumers’ requests or target audiences.

Speaking in a recent interview with Channels Television, Unlimited L.A said:

“Talking about it [infusion of foreign cultures and nudity in Nigerian music videos], I think Nigerians are the most traveled people. I read it somewhere.

“What we do as music video directors is to take instructions from the artists. Some artists may say they want their fans in the U.S., Europe, or Africa to relate to a particular music video. So the consumer is key. Sometimes, we [music video directors] just put everything [infuse different cultures] together and throw it out there.

“I think it’s because of Nigerians in the diaspora that make us infuse foreign cultures in our music videos. It’s not as if we don’t have our own culture. We have our own culture too. But because we are targeting a wide range of audiences, we have to infuse different cultures in music videos.”

He said even though some foreign cultures may appear as “eroding our cultural respect, decency” they incorporated into Nigerian music videos to appeal to the audience.

Speaking further, Unlimited L.A admitted that the Nigerian cinematography industry has made tremendous progress, noting that some years ago most Nigerian music videos were shot outside the country but now most Afrobeats music videos are filmed in Nigeria.
