Nollywood actress Motilola Akinlami has bared her soul in a powerful and deeply emotional conversation with Biola Adebayo on the Talk to B show. She opened up about her divorce, online blackmail, and the painful stigma women face after leaving their marriages.
In her signature no-holds-barred style, the Yoruba actress revealed that her 2021 divorce from her Air Force husband wasn’t just a private decision. She claimed it was forced into the public space after a blogger threatened to expose her. Motilola began:
“Why did I announce my divorce?.
“There was a blog at that time, the blogger messaged me and said, ‘You live in disguise, and I will expose it. I know that you have left your marriage.’ I was like, ‘You want to blackmail me at this point? When I have got nothing else to lose? I will post it.’”
Going further, the mother of two, questioned the growing public perception that some women enter marriage with a plan to walk out. She declared:
“Except a woman is clinically insane, no woman will ever go into a marriage with the intention of leaving. You go because you want forever.”
She used the platform to encourage other women in similar situations not to allow shame, gossip, or online bullying to rob them of peace and healing.
While her divorce announcement initially seemed amicable, with Motilola stating that the split was mutual and without violence, the months that followed were anything but quiet.
Not long after the news broke, controversial blog Gistlover alleged that the real reason for the divorce was a scandal involving fellow actor Kunle Afod.
The blog claimed that Kunle’s wife, Desola Afod, had accused him of having an affair with Motilola and possibly fathering her last child due to their alleged resemblance. The rumour reportedly pushed Motilola’s husband to walk out on the marriage.
Motilola denied these claims but soon found herself locked in a public feud with Kunle and Desola. In 2023, she accused the couple of sabotaging her career, stating that Desola had spread false accusations about her online, while Kunle allegedly defamed her within the industry.
