- Amidst the uproar following the government’s decision to alter the national anthem, a police officer has taken a private school to task for flouting the new directive.
- She vehemently accused the school’s proprietor and head teacher of defiantly encouraging students to cling to the old anthem instead of adopting the reinstated version.
Former Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Dolapo Badmus, has called for the arrest of the proprietor and head teacher of a private school (name withheld) for persisting in singing the old national anthem.
Recall that President Bola Tinubu signed the Old National Anthem Bill 2024 on Wednesday, reintroducing “Nigeria, We Hail Thee” as the national anthem, replacing “Arise, O Compatriots.”.
In an emphatic Instagram post on Friday, former Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer Dolapo Badmus denounced the refusal to adopt the newly reinstated national anthem as a blatant act of unpatriotic defiance that would not be tolerated.
She underscored the illegality of continuing to use the old anthem, highlighting that such actions directly contravene the law following President Bola Tinubu’s recent signing of the Old National Anthem Bill 2024.
Dolapo Badmus added that the proprietor and head teacher would face legal action for their offense. She stated that they will be charged in court for their blatant disregard of the law, reinforcing her message that such unpatriotic behavior will have serious consequences.
She wrote, “If, as of today, three days after the president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria signed and assented the new national Anthem into law, you are not able to recite it in its entirety, then you are a suspect.
“I just passed through a private school, and I could hear them singing the old National Anthem! Arise oh compatriots”! (We are no longer arising as compatriots; it is Nigeria we are hailing now.)
“I have called police to come and arrest not only the proprietor but the head teacher inclusive ( I will make sure they are charged to court) Don’t ask me for what offence? Consult any lawyer to learn more. Anyone not singing the new national anthem is sabotaging Nigeria. I won’t tolerate any unpatriotic attitude”
