Godwin Emefiele, Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), arrived in Nigeria on Monday amid calls for his arrest.
WITHIN NIGERIA previously reported that Emefiele had returned to the country after his two-week leave abroad had expired.
Emefiele escaped arrest at the airport upon his arrival in the country thanks to the intervention of one of the Service Chiefs.
There were reports that the Department of State Service (DSS) raided the CBN headquarters on Monday to arrest Emefiele.
The secret police allegedly attempted to arrest him on terrorism financing and fraud charges.
According to a source who spoke with the Daily Sun, the Service Chief obtained permission for the jet that brought Emefiele back to the country to land at the private wing of Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, where military personnel was stationed.
Due to the presence of military personnel, DSS agents were unable to arrest Emefiele.
According to a source, top DSS officials have made Emefiele’s resignation a condition for him to be released from the controversy.
Meanwhile, the 9th Senate, led by Ahmad Lawan, has requested that the CBN Governor submit documents pertaining to the apex bank’s Ways and Means.
According to sources who spoke with the platform, lawmakers have vowed not to approve the 2023 budget until they see documents on the CBN loans used to finance budget shortfalls.
According to statistics, the debt of the Ways and Means Commission increased from N17. 5 trillion in December 2021 to N23. 8 trillion in October 2022.
In a related development, the DSS denied on Monday invading the CBN headquarters in order to arrest Emefiele.
The spokesman of DSS, Peter Afunanya in a statement said;
The attention of the DSS has been drawn to the false news making the round that its operatives invaded the Central Bank of Nigeria and arrested its governor, today 16/1/23 (yesterday). This is fake news and quite misleading.
