Stakeholders have expressed their displeasure with the Ondo State Government’s decision to sell the state’s two football clubs.

The stakeholders criticised the choice as ill-advised and revealed that if the state government went ahead with the proposal, the state’s overall sports development would suffer.

According to Dele Ologbese, convener of the Ondo State Football Stakeholders Forum and the first Secretary of the Ondo State Football Agency, Odsfa, in a statement issued in Akure, the state capital, the move was unpopular, particularly because it will reflect poorly on the Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu-led administration.

Bamidele Ologunloluwa, the Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, had on Wednesday stated that the government had already started looking for suitable investors for the two clubs.

Ologbese lauded Akeredolu for his accomplishments in other sectors, but he underlined that the administration’s record in the football department was not outstanding.

The forum, according to the Ologbese, was tired of wasting time arguing with the government about how to best situate the clubs for efficient management.

“It’s a high level of insensitivity and a breach of the social contract in disposing off Ondo State’s people’s treasures, the Sunshine Stars and Sunshine Queens, at a time other states in the country are striving to have teams in the Nigeria Premier Football League, Npfl, and the Nigeria Women Football League, NWFL.”
