There is widespread speculation that the Spanish La Liga will be halted this weekend due to a strike by the league’s referees.

Football Espana, a well-known Spanish publication, reported earlier today that Spanish La Liga referees may go on strike to protest what they called “public pressure” and “physical danger.”

Some of the instances that motivated Spanish La Liga Referees To Consider strike action:

Following the conclusion of an Under-19s match between Polillas and Calavera, many people were accused of assaulting a referee outside the stadium, including the players’ parents.

Following the attack, the Spanish official reportedly suffered various degrees of injuries.

Following that, the Spanish Referee Federation condemned the incident and blamed it on anti-official sentiments.

The Anti-Violence Committee also calls on elite teams to take more responsibility, citing a case in which Valencia manager Javier Solis criticised a match official following his team’s 2-0 loss to Sevilla on Sunday.

To express their dissatisfaction with the safety of match officials, the Federation’s referees are considering going on strike, which would result in the suspension of La Liga this weekend.

They are unhappy with the way football officials and fans have been clashing across the country.

If the rumoured strike plans come to fruition this weekend, the game between FC Barcelona and Atletico Madrid would be the most affected in Spanish La Liga. The game is set to begin at 15:15 on Sunday, April 23.

Barcelona currently leads the league table with 73 points after 29 league games, 11 points ahead of Real Madrid in second place.
