The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has identified several states that will see heavy rain and thunderstorms in the coming days.

In a statement issued today, the agency stated that while some states are already receiving rain, the following states should expect heavy downpours in the near future: Plateau, FCT, Nasarawa, Jigawa, Adamawa, Yobe, Borno, Bauchi, Gombe, Kaduna, Kano, and Katsina.

Thunderstorm cells are currently observed over the country’s northern parts, including Borno, Taraba, Gombe, Bauchi and Kano.

These are expected to propagate westward to give equally thunderstorm to some cities, the statement noted.

The current thunderstorm cells are expected to propagate easterly, bringing thunderstorms and squalls to the cities listed in the next 2-6 hours, according to the statement.

According to NiMet, strong winds are likely to precede thunderstorms, and as a result, trees, electric poles, unsecured objects, and weak buildings may be felled, so the public is advised to be cautious and stay indoors, especially during heavy rainfall, to avoid being struck by lightning.

As a result, the agency advised all airline operators to use weather reports on a regular basis for effective planning in their operations.

It went on to say that moderate to heavy rainfall could cause flash floods. Furthermore, disaster risk managers, agencies, and individuals have been urged to be proactive in order to avoid the loss of lives and property during the rainy season.
