  • Tinubu commends Super Falcons performance at FIFA Women’s World Cup
  • Atiku says no regrets skipping his breakfast for the game

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, have hailed the Super Falcons for making Nigeria proud despite their exit from the 2023 Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.

WITHIN NIGERIA had earlier reported how the Super Falcons crashed out of the tournament after losing to the Three Lionesses of England in their Round of 16 match at the Brisbane Stadium in Queensland Australia on Monday.

Both teams played out a goalless draw during regulation time and with the game proceeding into extra time, Lauren James received a red card for a needless stamp on Michelle Alozie.

Despite England being one player down, the European nation held on for the whole duration of extra time after which they defeated Nigeria 4-2 during a penalty shootout.

Tinubu and Atiku after the match took to Twitter to praise the Nigerian ladies for braving all odds to reach the knockout stage of the 2023 Women’s World Cup where they lost gallantly.

“I must commend the effort by our Super Falcons @NGSuper_Falcons at the FIFA Women’s World Cup,” President Tinubu tweeted.

“Your brilliant performance did not go unnoticed despite the final outcome. You made Nigeria proud on the global stage!”

The Candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) during the 2023 Presidential election, Atiku said he still has no regrets about skipping his breakfast for the game.

“We may have lost to England in a penalty shootout, but the @NGSuper_Falcons have every reason to hold their heads high,” he tweeted.

Also reacting, former Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki tweeted: “Despite the heartbreak of the penalty shootout, I am proud of the Super Falcons for their incredible journey in the #FIFAWWC. And you, @NGSuper_Falcons, should be proud of what you have achieved. #ENGNGA.”
