  • General Abdourahamane Tchiani announced that the Niger junta will hand over power to the civilian government within three years
  • The delegation met with ousted Niger President Mohamed Bazoum after meeting Tchiani, but no truce has been reached yet

The three-year power transfer plan proposed by the junta in the Republic of Niger has been rejected by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

This was revealed on Sunday during an interview with the BBC by Abdel-Fatau Musa, the ECOWAS Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace, and Security.

General Abdourahamane Tchiani, the head of the Niger junta, declared on television on Saturday night that the army will only cede power to the civilian government in the following three years.

Tchiani’s plan, according to Abdel-Fatau Musa in the BBC interview, is merely a front for negotiations and diplomacy.

Also on Saturday, Nigeria’s former Military Head of State, Abdulsalami Abubakar, led a delegation of ECOWAS to Niger in a last-ditch diplomatic effort to reach a peaceful resolution with the junta.

The delegation met with the ousted Niger President Mohamed Bazoum after meeting Tchiani, but no truce has been reached yet.
