  • The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) will provide a N10 million start-up grant to each of the 20 clubs for the 2023/24 season
  • The prize money for the season has been increased from N100 million to N150 million, with the season set to begin on September 30

The 20 clubs in the Nigeria Premier Football League will each receive a N10 million start-up grant as the organisers announced that the 2023/24 season would begin on Saturday, September 30, after two postponements and that the prize money for the season has been increased from N100 million to N150 million.

This comes nearly three weeks after its previous indefinite postponement.

The NPFL board stated in a circular sent to all clubs and signed by the league’s Chief Operating Officer, Davidson Owumi, and obtained by our correspondent, that the league would begin with the hope of securing the deals that forced its postponement.

The 20 clubs will, as was done last season, receive a take-off grant of N10m each to smoothen your operations as the season starts. We are, therefore, expecting all the clubs to as a matter of urgency forward their respective account details to the NPFL secretariat for the transfer of the said amount as the season is set to commence on Saturday September 30, the letter read.

After the initial postponement from August 26 to September 9, the league was supposed to kick off with a fixture between 3SC and Plateau United in Ibadan, while other games were scheduled for the following Sunday.

Serie A: Osimhen unfazed Over goals drought

Napoli striker Victor Osimhen has revealed that he is ‘not bothered’ about his goal drought this season.

The Nigeria international failed to score for the third time in three games during Napoli’s 2-1 Champions League win over SC Braga on Wednesday, but he believes he will rediscover his scoring touch soon.

Last season, the 24-year-old scored 31 goals across all competitions to lead Napoli to their first Serie A title.

It’s strange to end a game without scoring,”Osimhen told UEFA.

I’m a striker and strikers live for goals but it’s not something that bothers me too much because it’s already happened and I’m prepared for it. It’s not just with goals that you help the team and I’m always ready to help in other ways.

Osimhen, who is one of the nominees for the 2023 Ballon d’Or award, was also thrilled to be named the Player of the Match in his side’s win over Braga.
