  • Minister Mohammed Idris defended the 2023 Supplementary Budget, citing its strategic provisions for critical sectors and citizens’ welfare
  • He urged Peter Obi and opposition parties to offer well-informed opinions, stressing the budget’s alignment with public needs

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has responded to concerns raised by 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi, asserting that the 2023 supplementary budget, signed into law by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is not an insensitive move but rather a bold and practical response to the immediate economic challenges confronting Nigeria.

In a statement released by the Media Special Assistant to the Minister, Rabiu Ibrahim, Idris addressed the claims made by Peter Obi, urging him to thoroughly acquaint himself with the specifics of the N2.17 trillion 2023 Supplementary Budget. This budget includes allocations for critical sectors such as security, agriculture and food security, works and housing, wage increases for workers, a student loan scheme, and social safety nets, among other provisions. The objective of these allocations is to strengthen the country’s economic foundations and enhance the living standards of Nigerians.

Idris explained, “The comprehensive provisions in the supplementary budget mirror President Tinubu’s strong commitment to support essential government functions, address pressing security concerns, and expedite the nation’s recovery from the economic impact resulting from the removal of fuel subsidies.”

He called upon opposition parties to exercise their right to differing opinions with well-informed and balanced perspectives, refraining from misrepresenting facts for political gain.

Idris emphasized that the supplementary budget was formulated through active engagement and consultation with relevant stakeholders to ensure that the budgetary provisions align with the needs and expectations of the Nigerian populace.

In alignment with President Tinubu’s commitment to accountability and transparency in government expenditure, Idris assured that all items in the supplementary budget have been meticulously scrutinized to ensure the efficient utilization of public funds.
