  • Sowore highlighted the necessity for citizens to defend their constitutional rights

During a town hall meeting at the Akure City Hall on Saturday, renowned rights activist Mr. Omoyele Sowore called for the resignation of Ondo State Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu.

Sowore emphasised the importance of freeing the state from alleged resource mismanagement by a few individuals. He specifically challenged the House of Assembly to publicly present the letter purportedly written by Governor Akeredolu requesting medical leave in order to verify its authenticity.

While he clarified that his presence was unrelated to the upcoming governorship election, Sowore emphasised the importance of accountable governance for citizens’ welfare.

Sowore expressed concern about Akeredolu’s continued tenure in office despite reported health issues, and he criticised the governor’s receipt of a security vote while absent from the legislature.

Addressing the political impasse and its detrimental impact on development, Sowore highlighted the necessity for citizens to defend their constitutional rights.

“We’ve tolerated this situation for too long in Ondo State. This crisis has lingered for more than a year now. They cannot produce any letter from the governor because he is not in a condition to sign any document at the moment. There is no such letter,” Sowore declared.

He urged the Acting Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, to ensure transparent governance that directly benefits the people in the coming months.

“This isn’t merely about Akeredolu’s resignation or resumption, but about ensuring that individuals appointed into political offices have the people’s interests at heart,” Sowore emphasized. “With elections on the horizon, it’s crucial to be discerning. Enough is enough; this must cease.”

Echoing similar sentiments, Human Rights Lawyer Tope Temokun criticized Akeredolu’s governance amid reported health challenges during his second term. Temokun urged Ondo State residents to continue exposing governmental shortcomings for the state’s advancement.

Governor Akeredolu reportedly transferred power to his deputy on December 13 due to prolonged health issues.
