  • The judgment was given in a fundamental human rights suit filed by the former CBN governor following his prolonged detention in the custody of the Department of State Services.
  • Recall that the ex-CBN boss was arrested on June 10 shortly after his suspension by President Bola Tinubu.

The extended arrest of Godwin Emfiele, a former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, without charge or trial has been ruled a gross violation of his fundamental rights by the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Abuja.

Additionally, the Federal Government and the Economic Financial Crimes Commission were hit with a N100 million punishment by the court.

Additionally, it prohibited Emefiele from being arrested or detained by the FG or its representatives without a court order.

The ruling was made in a basic human rights lawsuit that the former governor of CBN brought after spending an extended period of time under the Department of State Services’ custody.

He requested that the court forbid the respondents from making any more arrests or detentions of him and order them to pay him N1 billion in damages.

The former head of CBN was taken into custody on June 10th, not long after President Bola Tinubu had suspended him.

The Federal Government, the Attorney General of the Federation, the EFCC, and its chairman were named as defendants in the lawsuit.
