  • Senator Tambuwal calls for comprehensive judicial reforms in Nigeria, emphasizing enhanced remuneration for lawyers, addressing economic challenges faced by practitioners
  • Tambuwal urges lawyers to lead discussions on minimum wage, holistic reforms, and inclusivity in addressing remuneration concerns

Senator Aminu Waziri Tambuwal has reiterated the call for comprehensive judicial reforms in Nigeria, emphasizing the necessity for enhanced remuneration for lawyers nationwide. Speaking at the National Summit of the Young Lawyers Forum of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) in Abuja, the Senate Committee on Housing and Urban Development Chairman assured us that the National Assembly is committed to realizing these reforms.

Tambuwal, a lawyer turned federal lawmaker, stressed the need for a collective effort in initiating the reforms, starting with legal practitioners in both public and private practice. He acknowledged Nigerian lawyers’ economic challenges and called for constructive conversations on issues affecting the legal profession, particularly the remuneration for lawyers.

“As lawyers, we live in the Nigerian States, we live in the Federal Republic of Nigeria; we are therefore not insulated from the happenings in our society and our country,” Tambuwal asserted.

He highlighted the ongoing discussions about minimum wage and improved remuneration and the broader discourse on restructuring and reforming various sectors. Tambuwal urged lawyers to assume a leadership role in these conversations, emphasizing the importance of holistic reforms to achieve the desired goals.

Addressing the complexity of the reform process, Tambuwal pointed out the need for inclusivity, stating, “We must take it holistically if we want to succeed.” He emphasized the importance of finding common ground and a collaborative approach to resolving issues related to the remuneration of lawyers.

Acknowledging the challenge faced by the four representatives of the Nigerian Bar Association in dealing with a larger panel of Attorneys General, Tambuwal stressed the necessity of inclusivity in driving the reform process. He specifically addressed the remuneration concerns of lawyers in both the private bar and public service, emphasizing the need to reconcile their perspectives.

Assuring the legal practitioners of the National Assembly’s support in realizing these reforms, Tambuwal stated, “Once that is achieved, it would be easier to pull it through because even in the National Assembly, there are so many lawyers working and there are so many lawyers who are legal assistants or legislative aides to the members of parliament. They will see to it that is implemented because it will benefit them too.”

In his first public appearance since the passing of former Ondo State Governor Rotimi Akeredolu, SAN, Tambuwal paid tribute to the late former President of the NBA, describing him as a dear brother, friend, and colleague.
