  • Mohamed Salah to miss the rest of AFCON due to a hamstring injury, with a recovery period of 21-28 days
  • Salah’s absence is a setback for Egypt’s AFCON hopes; his departure follows a significant hamstring injury sustained against Ghana

Egyptian forward Mohamed Salah will miss the remainder of the AFCON football tournament as he is set to be sidelined for a period between 21 and 28 days. The announcement was made by his agent, Ramy Abbas.

Salah, a key player for Liverpool, sustained a hamstring injury during Egypt’s 2-2 draw with Ghana, prompting his departure from the national team squad in Ivory Coast to continue recovery in Liverpool.

The timeline for Salah’s absence means that, if he is out for the full 28 days, he would not be available until February 12, a day after the AFCON final. The severity of the injury, revealed by Abbas, was more significant than initially thought.

Abbas stated, “His best chance at participating in the current AFCON is by undergoing intensive rehabilitation in the UK and rejoining the team as soon as he is fit.”

Salah’s absence is a blow to Egypt’s aspirations in the AFCON tournament, as he has been a key contributor. Egypt’s last AFCON title came in 2010, and Salah’s optimism about winning the tournament sooner or later will have to wait until a future edition.

The Liverpool star scored a late penalty in Egypt’s 2-2 draw with Mozambique, helping them avoid an opening defeat in the tournament. However, his injury setback means he won’t be able to contribute further in this edition of AFCON.
