Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate, advocates for African leaders to adopt the transparency demonstrated by the late Namibian President, Hage Geingob, regarding their health status.

Obi conveyed this message on Sunday through his X handle, emphasizing the need for leaders to disclose their health details openly. Earlier on January 25, he had criticized President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for undertaking a ‘private visit’ to France without divulging the specifics.

Expressing condolences for President Geingob’s demise, Obi remarked, “I have just read, with a deep sense of loss, the sad news of the death of the President of Namibia, Hage Geingob, who passed on yesterday. I sincerely commiserate with the government and good people of Namibia over the irreplaceable loss.”

Obi urged continuity in democratic progress in Namibia, endorsing acting president Nangolo Mbumba to maintain the trajectory of accountable governance. He reflected on the late president’s exemplary transparency, citing his openness about a medical trip to the United States as a model for political leaders across the continent.

“The late president was modest and selfless in delivering good governance to his people. He understood that he was a public office holder, patriotically disclosing the purpose and details of his medical trip to the United States of America to his people, thus setting an example for other political leaders on the continent to emulate,” Obi emphasized.
