  • CBN employees express fear over ongoing dismissals post-Dr. Olayemi Cardoso’s appointment, with concerns extending to all departments
  • Recent termination of 50 staff members adds to the tally of approximately 117 dismissals in the past 20 days

Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) employees have revealed they are gripped by fear due to the continuous dismissals following Dr. Olayemi Cardoso’s appointment as Governor.

In conversations with Daily Trust, CBN workers expressed concern that no department within the apex bank is immune to the ongoing wave of terminations.

The staff members’ apprehension intensified following the recent dismissal of another 50 colleagues on Monday. This brings the total number of dismissals to approximately 117 in the past 20 days, affecting 29 different departments.

The termination of appointments has impacted employees across various ranks, including directors, deputy directors, assistant directors, principal managers, senior managers, and lower-ranking staff.

One staff member described the situation as alarming: “Indiscriminate sacking has been observed in procurement, development finance, and the medical services department, indicating that other departments may also be targeted soon.”

Expressing further distress, another senior staff member highlighted the subdued reactions of those who received termination letters, indicating a sense of helplessness prevailing among the workforce.

Under Governor Cardoso’s leadership, the CBN has undergone significant changes both in policies and personnel, diverging from the approach of the previous Governor, Godwin Emefiele.

Furthermore, there have been complaints from vendors, some of whom completed their contracts with the CBN since last June but have not received payment, raising suspicions that the previous management’s practices may have disadvantaged them.

This atmosphere of uncertainty and suspicion is not conducive to productivity and challenges the effectiveness of the institution’s operations.
