  • Florian Wirtz’s hat-trick and goals from Victor Boniface and Granit Xhaka sealed the triumph, highlighting Leverkusen’s remarkable unbeaten streak

Bayer Leverkusen clinched their inaugural Bundesliga title in a remarkable 5-0 victory over Werder Bremen, ending Bayern Munich’s 11-year dominance.

Xabi Alonso’s squad, aware that a triumph would secure the title with five games left, displayed a commanding performance fitting of champions, extending their impressive unbeaten streak to 43 matches across all competitions.

Florian Wirtz’s hat-trick, alongside goals from Victor Boniface and Granit Xhaka, sealed the triumph. However, Boniface, whose goal-scoring prowess has been instrumental in Leverkusen’s title quest, humbly deflected individual accolades.

“I didn’t lead anyone; we led ourselves,” remarked the Nigerian forward on social media platform X Monday, emphasizing the collective endeavour behind the club’s triumph.

Boniface initiated the scoring from the penalty spot in the 25th minute and later assisted Xhaka’s goal, amassing 11 goals and nine assists in just 18 Bundesliga appearances this season despite enduring a four-month injury hiatus.

Alonso expressed, “This marks a profoundly significant moment for the club. Winning the Bundesliga after 120 years is truly exceptional. The players have been exceptional. I am immensely proud of everyone.”

With the Bundesliga secured, Leverkusen eyes the opportunity to become the first team to complete an unbeaten Bundesliga campaign while also remaining contenders for an unprecedented treble, with the DFB-Pokal and UEFA Europa League within reach.
