Tinubu Appoints Ajuri Ngelale to New Climate Action Role

Ngelale will also serve as the secretary of a newly established 25-member committee tasked with overseeing Green Economic Initiatives

  • President Tinubu appointed Ajuri Ngelale as Special Presidential Envoy on Climate Action and secretary of a new 25-member committee
  • The committee, chaired by President Tinubu, aims to coordinate policies and programs on climate action and green economic development

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Ajuri Ngelale, his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, to a new role as Special Presidential Envoy on Climate Action. This announcement was made by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, in a statement released on Sunday.

The statement, signed by Segun Imohiosen, Director of Information and Public Relations in the SGF’s office, revealed that Ngelale will also serve as the secretary of a newly established 25-member committee tasked with overseeing Green Economic Initiatives. President Tinubu will chair this committee.

“Chief Ngelale will serve in this role as part of a larger Presidential Committee, chaired by the President. The President established the Presidential Committee on Climate Action and Green Economic Solutions, will coordinate and oversee all policies and programs on climate action and green economic development,” the statement read.

The committee aims to ensure a cohesive approach to climate action programs, streamline governance, and align relevant institutions with the President’s vision for climate action under the Renewed Hope Agenda.

In addition to President Tinubu and Ngelale, the committee includes notable members such as Balarabe Abbas Lawal, Minister of Environment (Vice-Chairman); Lazarus Angbazo, CEO of InfraCorp; Salisu Dahiru, CEO of NCCC; Michael Ohiani, CEO of ICRC; Aisha Rimi, CEO of NIPC; Aminu Umar-Sadiq, CEO of NSIA; Yusuf Maina-Bukar, CEO of NAGGW; Abdullahi Mustapha, CEO of ECN; Abba Abubakar Aliyu, CEO of REA; and Uzoma Nwagba, CEO of CrediCorp.

Other members include Khalil Halilu, CEO of NASENI; Fatima Shinkafi, CEO of SMDF; Bala Bello, Deputy Governor of CBN; Lolade Abiola, UN SE4ALL; Teni Majekodunmi, NCCC Adviser; and representatives from various federal ministries, the Federal Inland Revenue Service, and the Nigeria Customs Service.

The committee’s responsibilities include:

  • Identifying, developing, and implementing innovative non-oil and non-gas climate action initiatives.
  • Coordinating activities of federal institutions to achieve climate action and green economic goals.
  • Collaborating with government and non-government entities to achieve federal climate action objectives.
  • Monitoring and guiding the progress of federal climate action and renewable energy projects.
  • Supervising the Energy Transition Working Group and the Presidential Steering Committee on Project Evergreen.
  • Preparing half-yearly updates on the government’s green ambitions and achievements.

While serving on this committee, Ngelale will continue as the president’s official spokesperson and special adviser on media and publicity.

“President Tinubu remains committed to achieving Nigeria’s green economy objectives and ensuring a just energy transition while unlocking new investments in this critical sector central to the nation’s economic future,” the statement concluded.
