Hyacinth Alia, governor of Benue, has said Nigeria’s diversity is a double-edged sword that can become our greatest asset if embraced properly.

Speaking at an event held at the Arewa house in Kaduna on Thursday, Alia said Nigeria’s diversity is a priceless treasure that deserves to be celebrated.

The event was a one day lecture to mark President Bola Tinubu one-year anniversary on Thursday.

In a statement, Tersoo Kula, his chief press secretary, said Alia regretted that diversity in Nigeria is often viewed as a source of division and conflict.

He said that diversity is a double-edged sword that can become our greatest asset if embraced properly.

“It is essential to recognise that diversity is a double-edged sword, that if embraced properly, can become our greatest asset,” the governor said.

“The key lies in understanding and harnessing our differences to build a more robust, united and prosperous Nigeria.

The governor said Tinubu’s economic policies prioritizes Nigeria’s diversity, supporting local businesses and artisans.

He said that reforms also helps to boost the economy and preserving the country’s rich cultural heritage.

Alia referenced the new national anthem, adding that it emphasised the importance of diversity in fostering innovation despite differences in tribe and tongue.

“When people from varied backgrounds come together, they bring different perspectives, experiences and ideas,” the statement reads.

“This confluence of thought drives creativity and problem-solving, which are critical for economic growth.

“Nigeria’s diverse population should be a powerhouse for entrepreneurship and innovation, fostering industries that are as varied as our people.

“Let us not take Nigeria’s diversity for granted as it offers immense opportunities for growth and unity.

“The richness of Nigeria’s ethnic, linguistic, religious and cultural diversity when harnessed effectively can lead to unparalleled growth and unity, showcasing Nigeria as a beacon of diversity and strength on the global stage.

“Our diversity should be our power, and our strength, should be in our unity. When we recognise, appreciate and accept this fact, then there would be no them and us.”

Alia urged Nigerians to celebrate the nation’s rich diversity, highlighting its over 250 ethnic groups, dialects, religions, and cultures as a reflection of its identity and potential.
