  • Many families in Jalingo are buying foodstuffs instead of rams for Eid al-Adha due to rising food prices
  • Ram dealers report declining sales as residents prioritize feeding their families over purchasing traditional rams for the celebration

In Jalingo, the capital of Taraba State, many families have purchased foodstuffs instead of rams for the upcoming Eid al-Adha celebration. Rising food prices have made it difficult for residents to afford essentials and traditional rams for the holiday.

Yakubu Adamu explained that unlike in previous years when foodstuffs were more affordable, the current high prices have forced many residents to focus on feeding their families rather than buying rams. The primary concern for low-income earners is now basic sustenance, given the soaring cost of living.

Similarly, Yakubu Haruna highlighted the importance of prioritizing family needs amidst financial constraints. He pointed out that adequately feeding one’s family now requires significant financial resources, leaving little room for additional expenses such as purchasing rams.

Ram dealers in Jalingo have reported a decline in sales due to these economic difficulties. Saidu Lawal, a dealer at the Jalingo ram market, expressed his frustration over poor sales despite efforts to attract buyers. He noted that while some residents opt for smaller, more affordable rams, only a few wealthy individuals can afford larger, more expensive ones.
