  • The Rural Urban Women Green Initiative at ATBU launched a tree-planting campaign, donating 400 seedlings to host communities
  • The initiative aims to combat climate change, including 200 economic trees like mango and 200 non-economic trees

The female academic staff of the Faculty of Agriculture and Agricultural Technology at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU), Bauchi, under the Rural Urban Women Green Initiative, have launched a tree-planting campaign. They donated 400 seedlings to the university’s host communities, Ruda Yausa and Gubi villages.

During the event, Professor Khadijah M. Bello, Chairperson of the initiative, emphasized that the effort aims to mitigate the adverse effects of climate change.

“We are dealing with significant environmental degradation from human activities like indiscriminate bush burning. To combat climate change, we have started a tree-planting campaign targeting our host communities,” Bello stated.

She detailed that the 400 seedlings included 200 non-economic trees and 200 economic trees, such as mango, cashew, guava, and orange.

“We provide 200 non-economic and 200 economic trees to our host communities here at the Gubi campus. We plan to extend this initiative to the university’s Yalwa campus,” Bello added.

She encouraged the recipients to care for the trees to ensure they yield maximum benefits.

Professor Sani Usman Kunya, the (Acting) Vice Chancellor of ATBU, represented by Professor AA Amba, Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture and Agricultural Technology, expressed concern over the ongoing illegal felling of trees and urged people to stop this harmful practice due to its environmental risks.

He praised the tree-planting initiative and called for its continued support and expansion.
