  • Minister Idris urged new NIPR members to promote Nigeria’s image globally, emphasizing positive representation amid national challenges
  • Maj. Gen. Chris Olukolade instructed members to expose unqualified practitioners and employers hiring non-registered public relations professionals

Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris, has urged newly inducted Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) members to use their platforms to enhance Nigeria’s image instead of de-marketing the country.

Speaking in Abuja during the special “diamond anniversary” induction of new NIPR members, Idris acknowledged the nation’s challenges but noted that other countries also face difficulties while still protecting their image.

Represented by the Director General of Voice of Nigeria, Mr Jibril Ndace, the minister emphasized the need for a collective effort to help Nigerians overcome the country’s current challenges.

Maj. Gen. Chris Olukolade (rtd), Chairman of the Enforcement and Compliance Committee of NIPR, reminded the newly inducted members of their role as whistleblowers within the institute and the profession. He instructed them to report anyone practising public relations without NIPR membership and employers hiring non-registered members, labelling them as quacks unfit for such positions.

During the induction ceremony, Dr. Ike Neliaku, President of the Institute and Chairman of the Council, reiterated the institute’s commitment to eliminating unqualified individuals from the profession.

During a visit by NIPR members to former Head of State, Gen. Yakubu Gowon, he expressed his desire for a united Nigeria where everyone works hard to ensure national unity. Gowon commended NIPR’s efforts in promoting national cohesion since its establishment in 1963 and encouraged others to follow their example.

Neliaku explained that the visit to the former Head of State was part of his administration’s efforts to engage key stakeholders in nation-building. He also announced that the institute’s upcoming Diamond Anniversary, scheduled for June 27, 2024, at the Transcorp Hilton Abuja, will celebrate outstanding Nigerians who have significantly contributed to the country’s success.
