Pirates kidnap 10 maritime workers in Rivers

  • The incident occurred in the early hours of Monday morning while the captives were travelling between Bonny and Port Harcourt.

At least 10 maritime workers have been reportedly kidnapped by suspected sea pirates in Rivers State.

They were said to have been abducted along the Bonny – Port Harcourt waterway on Monday.

Though details are still sketchy, Channels Television reports that the incident occurred in the early hours of Monday morning while the captives were travelling between Bonny and Port Harcourt.

The district Chairman, MARITIME Workers Union of Nigeria Rivers State district, Israel Pepple, confirmed the incident.

He said the incident indeed happened and security agencies have been notified of it.

He said “It’s not a rumour, it is real. 10 persons have been kidnapped this morning coming from Bonny to Port Harcourt. We’ve reported to the security agencies”.

The police public relations officer confirmed the development.

He said the Commissioner of Police, Olatunji Disu, had mandated the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations, DCP Olugbenga Adepoju and the DPOs in that area to make sure the victims regain their freedom as soon as possible.
