The Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRasaq, has given his stamp of approval for a minimum wage of N70,000 for civil servants in the state.
This development was announced by Hauwa Nuru, Kwara’s commissioner for finance, who revealed that the new minimum wage will take effect this October.
Nuru noted that the increased pay package “is a significant move to enhance the welfare of workers in Kwara state”.
According to Nuru, the decision was made after a successful meeting between government representatives, labour leaders – including the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC), and the Joint Negotiating Council (JNC) – and private sector representatives.
Nuru praised the governor for granting autonomy to the minimum wage committee, highlighting his swift implementation as a proactive and worker-friendly approach.
The governor has reaffirmed his commitment to civil servants’ welfare, ensuring the increment benefits workers across Kwara’s 16 Local Government Areas (LGAs).
Nuru also commended the collaborative efforts between the government and labour unions that led to the approval of the N70,000 minimum wage.
This development follows President Bola Tinubu’s signing of the minimum wage bill into law in July, raising the pay package from N30,000 to N70,000.
