  • The project aims to address Nigeria’s long-standing conflict between farmers and herders

200MillionTrees, a pioneering social enterprise, has announced the start of the Leucaena 3-in-1 Project.

Local farmers, Fulani organisations, and traditional rulers are among the key partners.

The foundation stated that the project aims to address Nigeria’s long-standing conflict between farmers and herders. It uses the versatile Leucaena tree to: provide alternative pasture for cattle, reducing encroachment on farmland; improve soil fertility through nitrogen fixation; and combat desertification.

“Farmer-herder clashes in Nigeria have claimed the lives of 19,000 people. We want to end it by promoting not only peace but also prosperity in the farming and herding communities.

“Our project has already made significant strides, with 800,000 Leucaena trees planted in the third quarter of 2024. The states include Niger, Kebbi, Zamfara, Kano, Jigawa, Bauchi, Yobe, Adamawa, Gombe and Taraba.

“Among the benefits of the Leucaena tree is that it increases cattle weight gain by 1 kilo every day and increases milk production by up to 20%,” said Ibraheem Dooba, CEO of 200MillionTrees.

“The Leucaena 3-in-1 Project is a shining example of innovative, community-driven solutions to Nigeria’s most pressing challenges,” said Marwa Nadama, founder of Foundation for Refugees Economic Empowerment and project supporter.
