EU Partners with UNEP to Tackle Methane Emissions in Nigeria

  • The EU-funded project aims to establish a national methane emissions baseline, focusing on the oil and gas, agriculture, and waste sectors

The European Union, through the UNEP’s International Methane Emissions Observatory (IMEO), is working to build capacity in Nigeria’s climate sector to address methane emissions.

This was revealed during a workshop in Abuja, led by Ms. Marci Paranski, Programme Manager at IMEO, as part of Nigeria’s Emissions Reduction Programme.

The EU-funded project aims to establish a national methane emissions baseline, focusing on the oil and gas, agriculture, and waste sectors.

The three-year initiative includes training civil servants, private sector professionals, and scientists to tackle methane emissions.

Dr. Nkiruka Maduekwe, Director-General of Nigeria’s National Council on Climate Change, praised the government’s commitment to reducing methane emissions by 2030.
