  • Federal Government launches Humanitarian Supply Chain Management Partnership for Localisation Project to address Nigeria’s growing humanitarian crisis
  • Vice President Shettima announces new Disaster Relief Fund to provide immediate support for disaster victims across the country

The Federal Government has launched the Humanitarian Supply Chain Management Partnership for Localisation Project to address Nigeria’s growing humanitarian crisis.

Vice President Kashim Shettima stressed that inaction would lead to devastating consequences, emphasizing the importance of tackling these crises at their roots.

The initiative aligns with Nigeria’s Localisation Framework, aiming to empower local actors and resources to manage the humanitarian challenges.

During the launch in Abuja, Shettima, represented by Deputy Chief of Staff to the President, Sen. Ibrahim Hassan Hadejia, noted that climate change and global economic challenges have intensified Nigeria’s humanitarian needs.

The Vice President announced that President Bola Tinubu has approved a new Disaster Relief Fund to provide immediate support for disaster victims nationwide. This fund will work in conjunction with the broader localisation strategy.

“Inaction is not an option; the cost of failing to address these crises at their roots will be devastating,” Shettima said.

He highlighted that localisation is essential for an inclusive and resilient future, putting local actors at the heart of humanitarian initiatives.

Established in 2019, the localisation framework aims to give national and local institutions greater authority in humanitarian decision-making.

The Office of the Special Assistant to the President on Special Duties, Emergency, and Logistics is implementing the current project alongside the Federal Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning, the US-based Fritz Institute, and other local partners.

Shettima further explained that this project is critical to President Tinubu’s broader focus on human capital development, aiming to enhance health outcomes, education access, and livelihood stability for affected communities.

Special Assistant to the President, Mohammed Ahmed, highlighted the importance of a collaborative approach to humanitarian aid, stating, “There is a need for a whole-of-government and whole-of-society approach, ensuring that every voice is heard, as issues like climate change and conflict impact all segments of society.”
