The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration Control (NAFDAC) has uncovered a warehouse in Lagos containing unregistered and expired supermarket items, raising concerns over public safety.

The facility, located in the Oke-Afa area of Okota, was discovered following intelligence reports. According to a statement released by NAFDAC on Wednesday, officials raided the warehouse and arrested its operators as they were offloading a 20-foot container filled with unregistered carbonated drinks.

Further inspections revealed over 14 rooms packed with expired and unregistered goods, some contaminated by rats due to poor storage conditions.

The agency has suspended operations at the facility and is conducting further investigations. “The facility was placed on hold, with all operations suspended pending further investigation. NAFDAC has invited the management to provide sourcing evidence, including the Global Listing for Supermarket Items (GLSI) certificate,” the statement read.

NAFDAC also issued a warning about the dangers of unregulated products, especially with the festive season approaching. Consumers were urged to verify the sources of products and report any suspicious activities to the nearest NAFDAC office.

The discovery highlights the ongoing challenge of ensuring food safety and quality in Nigeria.
