Darren Jason Watkins Jr., known as IShowSpeed, is a 21-year-old American YouTuber and streamer famous for high-energy gaming and wild reactions. His antics, like barking and yelling “SIUUU!” in celebration, have attracted a huge following. By early 2026, Speed was among YouTube’s fastest-growing creators. His latest adventure, a 28-day tour called “Speed Does Africa,” began December 29, 2025, taking him to 20 countries to explore their cultures, food, and people, all streamed live for his fans.
The tour was a success from the outset. At every stop, Speed attracted enthusiastic crowds across countries from Ethiopia to Kenya. His momentum was unmistakable: in Ethiopia, he celebrated over 280,000 new subscribers in a single day, setting a personal record for his journey. Then, in Kenya, during a helicopter ride over Nairobi, he gained another 260,000 subscribers. This surge pushed him to 48 million and marked one of his favorite streams ever. By the time he arrived in Nigeria, his 15th destination, anticipation and energy were at their highest. Nigeria wasn’t merely a stop on the itinerary, it became the exhilarating point where everything truly clicked.

Arrival in Lagos: Crowds, Chaos, and Culture

Speed landed in Lagos, Nigeria’s bustling economic hub, on January 21, 2026, his 21st birthday, a moment he had long anticipated. Bursting with excitement, he went live soon after arriving, immersing himself in the city’s vibrant streets. Lagos welcomed him with infectious energy and warmth. Massive crowds surrounded him, cheering joyfully and chanting his name at every turn. He kicked off his journey at Balogun Market on Lagos Island, a lively hub of shops and street sellers. Locals playfully heckled, requested money, and eagerly tried to join his stream. The celebration was raw and real, perfectly matching Speed’s signature style.
From there, he visited Freedom Park, a historic site turned cultural spot, and the Nike Art Gallery, where he checked out local art. He sampled Nigerian jollof rice and declared it the best in the world, better than any other country’s version he’d tried on the tour. He even FaceTimed Nigerian superstar Davido, adding a touch of celebrity flair to the day. And in a fun twist, he met his long-time lookalike, a local fan who looks just like him. The whole thing went viral, with clips flooding social media.

The Big Milestone: Hitting 50 Million Subscribers

The highlight? While streaming live from a street in Lagos (specifically near Admiralty Mall in Lekki), Speed watched his subscriber count tick over to 50 million. It happened right in the middle of his birthday stream, with fans watching in real time. He stopped his security convoy by the side of the road, pulled out a cake, and smashed his face into it to celebrate. “SIUUU!” he yelled, as the crowd went wild. Speed got emotional, saying he couldn’t believe it. This made him the first Black creator to reach 50 million YouTube subscribers, a huge deal in the creator world.
Before the tour, Speed had around 47 million subscribers. The Africa trip accelerated his growth, with Nigeria delivering the final push. As of January 21, 2026, he hit 50 million, with the milestone livestream quickly earning massive views.

Here’s a quick look at his subscriber growth during key parts of the tour:
Ethiopia Over 280,000 Around 47.5 million
Kenya Over 260,000 48 million
Nigeria Final push to milestone 50 million
This table shows how the tour built momentum, with Africa playing a key role in his rise.

Viral Moments and What It Means for Nigeria

Speed’s day in Lagos wasn’t all smooth; there were chaotic moments, like when road hustlers approached him on Ikoyi Road. But he stayed safe and kept the energy high. He praised Nigerians for their warmth, saying the country gave him his best moments yet. “Nigeria really showed out,” he said in clips.
For Nigeria, Speed’s visit was a boost. It put Lagos on the map for its global audience, highlighting its markets, art, and food.
Local creators like Egungun of Lagos joined him, barking along and celebrating the milestone. Even though some felt big Nigerian streamers like Peller got overlooked, the overall vibe was positive. Speed’s tour is shining a light on Africa, showing it’s a fun, welcoming place, not just the stereotypes.

Why This Matters: A Historic Win

Speed’s Lagos stop turned a regular tour day into history. Hitting 50 million on his birthday, in a country full of energy, feels like fate. It’s not just about the numbers; it’s about breaking barriers as the first Black YouTuber to get there. His Africa tour has drawn millions of views, helping change how people see the continent. As Speed moves on to more countries, Nigeria will always be the place where he leveled up big time.
In the end, this story shows how one streamer’s adventure can connect worlds. Speed came to Nigeria for fun, but left with a milestone that’ll inspire creators everywhere.
