EXPLAINER: How Nigerians can qualify to join the US Army

Nigerians interested in serving in the United States military must satisfy a range of legal, educational, medical and physical requirements, as enlistment is only open to individuals who meet the eligibility standards set by the U.S. Armed Forces.

Although the military accepts both American citizens and certain non-citizens, applicants must first fulfil strict conditions before they can be considered for service in any branch.

Permanent residency comes first

For Nigerians and other foreign nationals, lawful permanent residency is the primary requirement for enlistment.

The U.S. military states that non-citizens are eligible to enlist only if they possess a valid U.S. Permanent Resident Card, commonly referred to as a Green Card.

Applicants are also expected to demonstrate proficiency in English by being able to speak, read and write the language fluently.

The military further makes it clear that enlistment cannot be used as a route to enter the United States or obtain a visa.

Age requirements differ across branches

The minimum and maximum age for enlistment depend on the branch of service an applicant wishes to join.

The U.S. Army accepts recruits between the ages of 17 and 35.

The U.S. Air Force and U.S. Space Force allow applications from individuals aged between 17 and 42.

The U.S. Coast Guard accepts applicants from 17 to 41 years of age.

The U.S. Navy also permits enlistment between the ages of 17 and 41.

The U.S. Marine Corps has the narrowest age range, accepting recruits from 17 to 28 years old.

In certain situations, applicants may qualify for age waivers depending on the requirements of the branch and their individual qualifications.

Aptitude test is compulsory

Every prospective recruit must sit for the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery, commonly known as the ASVAB.

The examination serves as the standard entry test for all branches of the U.S. military.

Each branch sets its own minimum qualifying score, while results are also used to determine the military occupations for which an applicant may be eligible.

Candidates can access official ASVAB materials to prepare for the examination, locate testing centres and understand how scores are assessed.

Military recruiters also assist applicants with scheduling the examination and explaining the score requirements for their chosen branch.

Educational qualifications

Applicants are required to possess either a high school diploma or a General Educational Development certificate before they can enlist.

The military notes that candidates holding a GED generally have fewer enlistment opportunities than those with a high school diploma.

However, GED holders may strengthen their applications by obtaining college credits or recording higher ASVAB scores.

Individuals with university degrees may also qualify to pursue commissioned officer positions after meeting additional requirements.

Medical and fitness assessments

All applicants must undergo a medical examination during the recruitment process to confirm that they satisfy the health standards required for military service.

Prospective recruits must also complete a physical fitness assessment before enlistment.

The fitness requirements vary among the different branches, and applicants are advised to obtain detailed guidance from military recruiters based on their preferred service.

Meeting the standards

The eligibility requirements form part of the U.S. military’s recruitment process aimed at ensuring that every recruit satisfies the legal, educational, medical and physical standards required for military service.

For Nigerians seeking to join the U.S. Armed Forces, obtaining lawful permanent resident status, meeting the prescribed age limit, possessing the required educational qualifications, passing the ASVAB examination and satisfying medical and fitness assessments remain the key steps towards eligibility.
