Every year, without fail, the internet’s favourite homepage gets a little dressed up. Balloons appear. Sometimes there’s a cake. This year, Google marked its 28th birthday on September 27, 2026, with a doodle that reached back into its own archive, reviving the very first beta version of its logo as a nostalgic nod to where it all started.

But here’s the part that trips up even long-time Google users: September 27 isn’t actually the day Google became a company. That happened three weeks earlier. So why does the world’s most-used search engine celebrate its birthday on a date that has nothing to do with its own paperwork? The answer is a small, oddly charming piece of corporate history, and it says a lot about how Google has always treated its own mythology as something flexible.

The Real Birthday Google Doesn’t Use

Strip away the doodles and the cake emojis, and the actual facts are straightforward. Larry Page and Sergey Brin, then PhD students at Stanford University, filed the paperwork to incorporate Google Inc. on September 4, 1998. That came shortly after Sun Microsystems co-founder Andy Bechtolsheim wrote them a $100,000 cheque on the spot, after watching a quick demo of their search technology, a cheque made out to a company that, technically, didn’t exist yet.

If you want to get even more particular about it, the google.com domain had already been registered a year earlier, on September 15, 1997. So depending on which milestone you pick, the domain, the incorporation, or the first product demo, Google could reasonably claim at least three different “birthdays,” none of which is September 27.

So Where Did September 27 Come From?

This is where it gets interesting. Google was inconsistent about its own birthday for years. In its early life, the company marked its anniversary on different days at different times, including September 4, 7, 8, and 15, which have all shown up in old company references. There wasn’t a fixed tradition yet.

The turning point came with the doodle. Google published its first-ever birthday doodle on September 27, 2002, to mark what it called its fourth anniversary. That date wasn’t chosen for any deep sentimental reason; it lined up conveniently with an announcement Google wanted to make about the size of its search index, at a time when it was locked in a very public rivalry with Yahoo over whose engine was indexing more of the web. Bragging about index size doubled as a birthday party.

The habit stuck around, on and off, until 2005 and 2006, when Google finally settled on September 27 as its permanent, official birthday going forward, and has kept it ever since. So in the strictest sense, the date is a marketing artefact that hardened into tradition. Google itself has more or less admitted this, saying in past statements that exactly when it celebrates has “moved around over the years, depending on when people feel like having cake.”

That line captures Google’s attitude perfectly. It’s a company powerful enough that it doesn’t need its birthday to line up with a legal filing. It picked a date, doodled about it enough times, and the internet simply accepted it.

10 Facts About Google’s Founders, First Logo, Name and Doodle History

1. It started as a Stanford research project, not a company.
Larry Page and Sergey Brin met at Stanford University in 1995. Their early collaboration wasn’t aimed at building a business, it was a research project analysing the web’s link structure, initially called “BackRub” because of how it examined the “back links” pointing to any given site.

2. The name “Google” is a misspelling — on purpose, sort of.
The name comes from “googol,” the mathematical term for the number 1 followed by 100 zeros, chosen to reflect the founders’ ambition to organise a seemingly infinite amount of information. The now-famous spelling was, depending on which version of the story you hear, either a deliberate stylistic choice or a happy accident that stuck.

3. The first logo wasn’t made by a professional designer.
Page and Brin built their earliest logo themselves using GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program), a free image-editing tool. It had a noticeably different colour arrangement from the Google we recognise today, and it lived on Stanford’s servers between 1997 and 1998, back when the search engine was still in beta.

4. Andy Bechtolsheim’s cheque technically arrived before the company existed.
In August 1998, the Sun Microsystems co-founder invested $100,000 after a brief demonstration, money that helped push Page and Brin toward formally incorporating Google Inc. the following month.

5. The domain predates the company by almost a year.
Google.com was registered on September 15, 1997, nearly twelve months before incorporation. Some observers argue this is the “truest” candidate for a Google birthday, since it marks the first day anyone could have typed the address.

6. The birthday doodle tradition began in 2002.
That first birthday doodle, marking Google’s fourth year, is the direct reason September 27 became associated with celebration at all. Doodles have appeared nearly every year since, evolving from simple graphic tweaks into fully animated, interactive tributes.

7. Google didn’t fully commit to September 27 until the mid-2000s.
Even after the 2002 doodle, the company kept switching dates for a few more years before locking in September 27 as the permanent choice around 2005–2006.

8. Google’s own materials have acknowledged the discrepancy.
On its 20th anniversary, Google publicly stated that it was incorporated on September 4 but had celebrated its birthday on September 27 for over a decade, effectively confirming that the date is tradition, not record.

9. The company has hit staggering milestones since that uncertain start.
Google crossed one billion monthly active users in May 2011, becoming the first website ever to do so. Its parent company, Alphabet, became the fourth company in history to reach a trillion-dollar market valuation in January 2020, and its market capitalisation now sits close to $3 trillion.

10. Both founders became centibillionaires off a project that began as homework.
Page and Brin’s original idea was tied to their doctoral research at Stanford. Today, their personal fortunes are estimated in the hundreds of billions of dollars each, a fairly dramatic outcome for a side project about analysing backlinks.

Why the Confusion Doesn’t Really Matter

At this point, Google’s birthday has become less about historical accuracy and more about brand ritual, a yearly excuse to look back at how far the company has come from a dorm-room search experiment. Whether you count from the domain registration, the incorporation date, or the day the first doodle appeared, the story underneath all three dates is the same: two graduate students built something in 1997 and 1998 that reshaped how the entire world finds information.

So happy 28th birthday, Google, whichever September day you’d like to blame for it.
