Tesla Cybertruck Discontinued: Elon Musk Announces Production Shutdown in 2027

Tesla’s Cybertruck is on its way out. Elon Musk confirmed on X on Friday, November 6, that the company will wind down production of the stainless-steel pickup at its Texas factory by mid-2027, which means the Cybertruck discontinued story is no longer a rumour but a company decision.

What Musk Actually Said

In his post, Musk said the Gigafactory Texas line is being cleared “to make room for increased Cybercab production.” The Cybercab is Tesla’s self-driving taxi, and it has become the centre of the company’s plans.

The wording matters. Musk said “winding down,” not an overnight halt, so trucks will keep coming off the line for several more months. Forbes reported that the Texas plant is the only one currently building the truck, and it is unclear whether production will continue elsewhere, though that looks unlikely.

Investors liked the news. Tesla’s stock rose 4.7% on Friday after the announcement.

A Short Life on the Market

The Cybertruck was unveiled in 2019. The first production trucks reached customers on November 30, 2023, after a long wait, and the truck had around two million preorders before launch. By the time it ends, it will have been on sale for less than four years.

Early demand did not last. The unpainted truck enjoyed a burst of popularity at the start of its run, but interest faded, and sales never matched what Tesla imagined back in 2019.

The Numbers Behind the Decision

Musk once talked about building 250,000 Cybertrucks a year. The sales figures are nowhere near that.

Tesla does not report Cybertruck sales as a separate line, so outside estimates have to fill the gap. Tesla’s “Other Models” category delivered 8,295 vehicles in the third quarter of 2026, and Electrek put the Cybertruck share at 7,000 to 8,000. Annualised, that points to roughly 28,000 to 32,000 trucks a year, about 13% of Musk’s goal.

Capacity tells the other half of the story. Tesla’s Q2 2026 investor presentation reportedly listed installed Cybertruck capacity at more than 125,000 units a year, close to four times the current sales pace. Electrek noted that Tesla has invested billions across R&D, supplier demands and its own production line.

Price Cuts, Cheaper Trims, and Little Change

Tesla tried to rescue demand. It added a cheaper rear-wheel-drive Cybertruck in 2025 but pulled it a few months later, and later offered a less expensive dual-motor version. A price cut earlier this year reportedly lifted buyer interest, which suggests buyers were sensitive to the $74,990 starting price.

Now the lineup is shrinking. Around the time of Musk’s announcement, Tesla stopped taking orders for the entry-level Dual-Motor All-Wheel Drive version, leaving only the Premium and Cyberbeast trims on its website. Electrek also reported that Tesla raised Cybertruck prices by up to 10% after announcing the end of production. If you want one at the lower price, the window is closing.

Cybercab Takes the Floor

This is the second Tesla model to lose its slot in 2026. Tesla ended Model S and Model X production earlier this year to free up its Fremont plant for Optimus, its humanoid robot. The pattern is clear: Tesla is putting its factory space behind robots and self-driving vehicles.

Analyst Dan Ives framed it that way, saying Musk is focused on robotics and the robotaxi era, which frees up production now that the Cybertruck ramp is winding down. Electrek was less convinced by the space argument, pointing out that Giga Texas isn’t actually short on room.

Tesla isn’t the only carmaker stepping back from electric trucks. Ford has already ended production of the F-150 Lightning, which outsold the Cybertruck in 2025.

What Happens to Current Owners?

Tesla has not said how long it will keep selling leftover inventory. It has also not said how long replacement parts will be available, but the production change does not mean Tesla will stop servicing trucks already on the road. Expect more detail as mid-2027 gets closer, and owners will be watching closely for any word on parts supply.

A Divisive Truck With a Real Fan Base

The Cybertruck was never a quiet vehicle. It has been the best-selling electric pickup, and the news hit Tesla fans hard because many of them see the truck as a symbol of their fandom. Others took the news calmly, since some fans understood the move toward Cybercab, given Tesla’s push into autonomy.

Critics were never shy either. Its angular looks, production quality issues and safety problems drew heavy criticism. Even so, the engineering was real. Electrek credited the truck with steer-by-wire and rear-wheel steering that no one else has put into a production pickup.
