Big Brother Naija Star, Mike Edwards Wins At MOC Grand Prix

Former Big Brother Naija housemate, Mike Edwards, who recently welcomed a son has cleared 2.15m to win the high jump event at the AFN/MOC Grand Prix.

The event took place on Wednesday at the Yaba College of Technology (Yabatech) Sports Ground,in Yaba, Lagos.

Edwards who came second at the 2019 Big Brother Naija ‘Pepper Dem’ reality show last competed last February, soaring to a height of 2.04m at the Steve Miller Open in Manhattan,New York,USA to place third.

Competing on Nigerian soil for the first time since December 2018 when he cleared 2.15m to win the gold medal at the 19th National Sports Festival held at the Abuja National (now Moshood Abiola) stadium, Edwards was the cynosure of all eyes at Yabatech and he didn’t disappoint as his 2.15m was good enough to win the event.

Interestingly, Edwards who holds an outdoor personal best of 2.25m has now cleared 2.15m as his best height in his three competitions in Nigeria.
He placed fourth with the height at the African Championship in Asaba,Delta State in August 2018 before striking gold four months later at the National Sports Festival.

It is not clear if Edwards is returning to track and field to fight his way to Tokyo to represent Nigeria at the Olympics this summer.

The 31 year will however need to not only set a new personal best,he will also have to break by at least 8cm the 2.27m national outdoor record set by Anthony Idiata in September 1999.

The qualification standard for the event is 2.33m.
