In a now ill-famed talk in which Sawyer grilled Spears at 22 years old for a 45-minute primetime special, Sawyer made Spears cry, pried into her sex life, showed the singer photos of herself (looking hot and iconic), then asked, condescendingly, “what she did” to cause the split, “What happened to your clothes?” “Do you like your voice?” And, the kicker: “Everyone always thought you had a different relationship to young girls.”
18 years after the interview, Spears who was recently freed from a debilitating conservatorship, is back on social media with a big microphone and vengeance for those who she says were complicit in her early aughts sexist media bashing.
Britney Spears also slammed her dad and former management team for forcing her into giving Diane Sawyer an interview in 2003.
In the now-deleted Instagram post, the star revealed that she was in a vulnerable state and didn’t want to do the interview but her management team “put that woman in my home and made me talk to her on national television”.
She called out the broadcaster for making her cry and further labelled Diane’s approach as a “you’re in the wrong” agenda.
Bringing up the interview, Britney wrote;
“Do we dare forget the Diane Sawyer interview in my apartment almost 20 years ago???
“What was with the “you’re in the wrong” approach ?? Geeze … and making me cry ??”
Recounting how the interview happened, the singer said;
“I lived in my apartment for a year and never spoke to anyone. My manager put that woman in my home and made me talk to her on national television and she asked me I had a shopping problem.
“When did I have a problem with shopping ??? Something I never shared when I had that big break up [heartbreak emoji] years ago was that I couldn’t talk afterwards…
“‘I never spoke to anyone for a very long time …I was in shock… pretty lame of my dad and three men to show up at my door when I could hardly speak… two days later they put Diane Sawyer in my living room.
“They forced me to talk !!! I was a baby …I was almost 22 and didn’t understand … but I f***ing know now [sic] She said “a woman or a girl” ….”
Britney Spears also revealed that she is happy that she can now control her finances. She said;
“Anyway I am able to have cash now so I went to an ATM and was so proud of my $300… and no I’m not embarrassed to share this … well maybe a little … but I’m more embarrassed for my family for condoning the fact that I wasn’t allowed to have cash for so long when I worked my little a** off for them.
“I’m embarrassed for the State of California for permitting my father to have me work as hard as he worked me all those years and never seeing a dime. I’m embarrassed for all of them and I’m sad for them because I know my value and worth now … and they LOST ME !!!”
She concluded that she had used the money to buy Christmas presents and wished her followers well during the festive season.
Britney added;
“I bought chocolate, Christmas socks and a bottle of white wine with my cash, it was great.
“I felt so independent when I came home. Hope you’re all having a wonderful Christmas.”
Britney Spears who was under a conservatorship for 13 years, has previously claimed that she underwent conservatorship abuse. She has blamed her family, including her father Jamie, for such abuse in the past, however, Jamie has denied wrongdoing. Spears has also taken jabs at her sister Jamie Lynn and mother Lynne, who have also denied wrongdoing.
