Spotify celebrates one-year in the Nigeria market with incredible progress, reveals most-streamed songs

It’s been a year since giant music streaming platform Spotify came to Nigeria and the company has recorded great success during that time.

Celebrating the one-year milestone in Nigeria, Spotify revealed how Nigerian music was streamed domestically and abroad.

In a statement released by the music streaming company, Spotify’s Head of Music in Sub-Saharan Africa, Phiona Okumu, confirmed reports that Nigerian music fans have created 1.3 million user-generated playlists.

“Its been one year since music streaming giant, Spotify launched in over 40 new markets across the continent, including Nigeria.

“365 days in, we are already seeing Nigerian music lovers discovering more music, local artists finding a megaphone for their work, and Nigerian genres getting exported across the globe.

“As Nigerians have become more familiar with Spotify, they have used the platform more and broadened their tastes.

“Since the launch, the average number of artists streamed per user has grown by 60 per cent and Nigerian music fans have created 1.3 million user-generated playlists.”

Nigerian artists, according to Okumu, dominated the local music scene, with WizKid, Burna Boy, DaVido, Buju (now known as BNXN), and Olamide leading the list of the top five most-streamed local artists.

She also stated that certain artists have found a megaphone for their work, with Ckay topping the list, followed by WizKid, Burna Boy, Tems, and Mr Eazi rounding out the top five.

Her reports also revealed that Fireboy DML’s Peru is the most-streamed song in Nigeria, followed by Monalisa by Lojay and Sarz with Feeling by Buju and LADIPOE in third place.

Understand by Omah Lay was the fourth most streamed song, with Adekunle Gold’s High rounding out the top five local tracks.
