Headies Awards Introduce New Categories, Celebrate Afrobeat

Made Kuti, Femi Kuti and Wikid

Afrobeat (s) is right now the biggest music genre to come out of Africa and taking the world by storm.

The genre has seen key players from different parts of the African continent redefined their sounds to fit in. The likes of Femi Kuti, Seun Kuti, Made Kuti, Wizkid, Burna Boy, Davido, Tiwa Savage, KiDi, Kuami Eugene, Angelique Kidjo, just to mention a few, have contributed immensely to the success of the music genre in the global scene.

It is only a wise move for The Headies organisers to adjust the award categories, and make room for Afrobeat. The newly included categories are, but not limited to, ‘Best Afrobeat Pop Single (Nigeria)’ and ‘Best Afrobeat Pop Album (Nigeria)’.

Other categories which are expected to be added to the forthcoming 15th edition of the Headies are; ‘Music Executive of the Year’, ‘Best African Collaboration’, ‘Best International Collaboration’, ‘African Artiste of the Year’, and ‘International Artiste of the Year’.
